The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
